Jaguar Rivers Initiative

New continental-scale rewilding endeavor spans Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay

We’re announcing the global launch of the Jaguar Rivers Initiative. Led by grassroots nonprofits in the Global South, this new continental-scale rewilding endeavor spans Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay, using the river corridors at the heart of the continent as the connective tissue.

Within a million-square-mile territory—nearly twice the size of Alaska, it will create much-needed connectivity for fragmented populations of jaguars, giant river otters, giant anteaters, and other species, and bring back missing species through translocation programs. This new cross-border model of large-scale restoration is dedicated to building resilience for people, climate and nature in the face of the massive biodiversity loss and climate chaos that has brought severe wildfires and droughts to South America.

Kris Tompkins, president and co-founder of Tompkins Conservation, announced the initiative at the Explorers Club during NYC Climate Week, alongside the leaders from the four founding nonprofits: Rewilding Argentina, Moisés Bertoni, Onçafari and Nativa.
