Zombie Ant Fungus: The Chemistry of Control

A Live Exploration of Fungal Neurobiology, Behavioural Manipulation and Chemical Communication

The Royal Institution (Ri) will present Zombie Ant Fungus: The Chemistry of Control, a live science performance examining one of the most compelling case studies in modern biology: how parasitic fungi chemically manipulate the behaviour of their hosts.

The work centres on Ophiocordyceps fungi, which infect ants and alters their nervous systems, motor behaviour and circadian rhythms in order to complete their life cycle. Drawing on current research in mycology, parasitology, neurobiology and chemical ecology, the performance translates complex scientific processes into a live, sensory-led Theatre performance format.

Created and produced by Bridget Nicholls of Pestival, Zombie Ant Fungus brings together scientists, artists and musicians to investigate how fungi exert control without a brain, using chemical signalling, immune modulation and tissue invasion to redirect host behaviour. The piece explores broader scientific questions around agency, distributed control systems, microbiomes and the limits of individual autonomy.

Each performance is followed by a moderated panel discussion with researchers working in fungal biology and behavioural science, offering audiences direct insight into the real science underpinning the current research frontiers, and emerging questions in host–parasite interaction.
